Le Nymphe di Rheno,
Johann Schenck (1660-1712)
Sonata V-VIII
Duo Sonatas for Violas
Francisco Luengo & Xurxo Varela
Viola da Gamba
Johann Schenck is one of the main baroque composers for viola da gamba. Of Germanic descent and a contemporary of the now popular Marin Marais and Antoine de Forqueray, he was born in Amsterdam in 1660.
"Le Nymphe di Rheno" in Dusseldorf is a collection of twelve sonatas for two solo violas. Published in Amsterdam, this collection already shows by the title and dedication, both in Italian, its intention to be "à la mode". Among the twelve sonatas, we find "da camera" sonatas, dance suites - or a mix between sonata and suite - and even something close to the "da chiesa" sonata.
Almost as a general rule, it can be said that the allegros, adagios and prestos are clearly Italian, sometimes even "Corellian", while the dances all have a definite French style. Thus, with the title "Le Nymphe di Rheno", Schenck intends to explain the synthesis of the national styles that these Nordic nymphs inspired him.
